Candidate Expenditure for the 2001 General Eleciton

Each candidate that stands for election receives a budget; how much they can spend on campaigning for election. In those few short weeks, have a look how much candidates were spending during the 2001 General Election.

How much do candidates get?All candidates standing for election at a constituency receive the same amount, be they standing for Labour or as an Independent. Figures for 2001 stated that each candidate would receive £5483, and a further 5p per elector in borough constituencies and 7p per elector in county constituencies. For the 2005 General Election, figures recently released show that candidates will be able to spend £7,150 (over 30% increase on 2001) in each constituency and a further 5 pence per elector in borough constituencies or a further 7 pence per elector in county constituencies. This spending is in addition to the millions that each party can spend on national campaigns, the limit currently set at £18.8m (over 22% increase on 2001). You may well wonder where does this money come from...
